Juno, my cat with her sassy attitude, critiquing my little figurines, always the art director.
Cats waiting to be packed up.
Headed to be bisque fired.
My first 5 kitties
Above are some images from my instagram posts, cat art from my sketchbooks.
This summer I’ve decided to create 100 clay cats. I started working on this theme months ago, when I took a Saturday ceramics class at CCAD. As the class came to a close, I discovered that my favorite pieces were the little cat figurines (see photo) I made quite fast, with out much consideration really. Over the months those last 5 cats sat there in my studio, looking over at me, much they way my own cat does (but much less annoying). :)
As the months passed, I kept looking at my clay cats and wondering if there could be more to these? I started to imagine the clay cats congregating with other cat friends. I heard little kitty conversations in my head and I imagined stories as well. I am always talking to my own cat Juno (see the sassy attitude above) and I’d venture to say that anyone living with a cat knows how the cat conversations can be an endless source of silliness.
This got me thinking about how we are so throughly connected to our animals. We choose to share our lives with them in an unconditional way. Cats have a way of expressing themselves through us and I wanted to be a conduit of sorts, to document their gestures and modes communication. They elegantly move through the world with precise, single minded agendas and even when they are doing something despicable, they still look gorgeous doing it.
I’m just starting…so stay posted! This is the first 30 cats. There’s more to come. Next stop, glaze these 30 and see what comes out after that. I’ll send out updates as I get them done. Eventually, these little babies will will available for purchase in my shop. So if you’re interested in possibly buying one of them just make sure you’re signed up on my mailing list.
